The Oklahoma U letters are a selfie destination for those tailgating at Parrington Oval before games. The angle and heights of the letters were carefully considered for visibility by pedestrians, drivers, and photographers. The center A & H are tallest to stand over the U, and get shorter gradually so the outer O & A are not as imposing.

For nearly 50 years, metal edging defined Oklahoma U letters filled with a seasonal rotation of plantings and stone. LAUD used aerial photos to document the existing letter forms. The letters and layout were carefully designed to maintain the spirit of the existing entry while establishing clean balanced forms.

The final concept included formalized planting beds framed with a structural hedge. Beyond, the square planting bed around the May We Have Peace sculpture by Allan Houser is rounded into a circle. This complements the curve cut by the Oklahoma U letters, and mirrors the circular form of the Spoonholder seating area farther south in the oval.

Assembly and structure of the letters was carefully considered for aesthetics, security, and ease of maintenance.

Internal frames hold electrical components and support resin panel. The white color reflects light for a consistent glow at night.

Resin color samples we studies in a variety of lighting conditions to get the closest color match to the University of Oklahoma’s brand colors.

RGB LED light pucks provide color control for night lighting.

Day and night, the Oklahoma U letters announce arrival to the University of Oklahoma campus.
